Weight gain is not always simply a willpower issue. It can involve food choices, overconsumption of calories, decreased activity, chronic stress, sleep disruption, medications, endocrine issues, hormonal changes, gut microbes, trauma protection, body shame, emotional eating, and buried feelings.
The deeper question is not only:
“What am I eating?”
The deeper question is:
“What feeling am I trying not to feel?”
Food, weight, appetite, body size, restriction, bingeing, purging, obsessing, or overtraining can all become ways to manage feelings that have not yet been faced directly. Food can comfort. Weight can protect. Restriction can create control. Bingeing can numb. Purging can attempt to erase shame. Bodybuilding can create power. Body obsession can distract from pain.
The goal is not shame. The goal is awareness.
