The Purpose of Your Condition

Autoimmune Conditions

What is the physiological purpose of autoimmune conditions? Why would the body attack itself?

The mainstream answer is: “Autoimmunity is the immune system gone rogue.”

But that’s incomplete. The body isn’t stupid. It doesn’t randomly turn on itself, it adapts, responds, and tries to protect even when it seems like it’s doing damage. From biology to trauma to soul.

What Are Autoimmune Conditions?

Autoimmune diseases (like Hashimoto’s, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, Psoriasis, etc.) occur when the immune system begins attacking the body’s own tissues, mistaking them for foreign threats.

But this “mistake” may actually be a misdirected survival attempt.

The Physiological Purpose of Autoimmunity, is immune overactivation from chronic threat perception

The immune system doesn’t just respond to germs it responds to stress, trauma, environmental toxins, and emotional repression.

Purpose

The body has been in threat mode for too long and the immune system is trying to defend against something, but the signal is confused.

It starts fighting internal patterns of dysfunction, inflammation, or even stored trauma in tissues.

Tissue-Level Trauma Memory

The body stores emotional and physical trauma in the fascia, organs, and joints.

Some autoimmune activity seems to target tissues with unresolved emotional residue — as if the immune system is trying to cleanse or “purge” what hasn’t been processed.

Purpose

“Let’s get rid of what hurts — even if it’s in us.”

Attempt to Stabilize Internal Chaos

In trauma-informed biology, we see that autoimmunity often follows:

  • Early childhood trauma or neglect
  • Identity repression (not feeling safe to be who you are)
  • Prolonged self- sacrificing.
  • Boundary collapse (not knowing where “you” end and others begin)

Autoimmunity becomes a misguided attempt to create internal order — even if it means attacking parts of the self.

Purpose

“If I can’t control the outer world, I’ll control the inner one.”

Signal to Pause, Slow Down, and Reevaluate, Autoimmune flares often force people to:

  • Rest
  • Reconnect to the body
  • Reassess their lives, jobs, relationships

In this sense, the disease becomes the boundary the person never had.

Purpose

“You won’t say no, so I will.”

Unmetabolized Grief, Guilt, or Rage

Emotionally, autoimmunity is often connected to:

  • Deep self-criticism
  • Repressed anger toward others or life
  • Grief that’s never had a voice
  • Feeling “not good enough” or unworthy at a core level

The immune system becomes a mirror of the psyche — attacking the self, because the self has been emotionally attacked for years.

Purpose

“You don’t see your worth — so your body is showing you the wound.”

Autoimmunity is not the body turning against you. It’s the body turning toward your pain, because you haven't been able to. It’s a sacred error, a biological cry, and often a call back to self-love, boundaries, and emotional honesty.

Autoimmune Conditions & Their Emotional/Spiritual Patterns

These are patterns often observed in somatic therapy, trauma-informed work, German New Medicine, and spiritual healing frameworks. They’re not “blame” they’re invitations to listen.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

  • Location: Throat (thyroid)
  • Theme: Repressed voice, not feeling safe to speak truth, over-accommodating others
  • Common inner conflict: “If I speak, I might be abandoned.”
  • Spiritual message: Reclaim your voice. It’s safe to tell the truth — first to yourself, then to others.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Location: Joints, especially hands and feet
  • Theme: Anger turned inward, control, rigidity
  • Common inner conflict: “I can’t let go or everything will fall apart.”
  • Spiritual message: Let the pain become softness. Flexibility — not perfection — is the path to strength.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Location: Nervous system (myelin sheath)
  • Theme: Feeling unsupported, fragmented identity, emotional freezing
  • Common inner conflict: “I have to hold it all together.”
  • Spiritual message: You are held. You don’t have to keep performing stability.

Lupus

  • Systemic, attacking healthy tissue
  • Theme: Deep self-betrayal, perfectionism, invisible suffering
  • Common inner conflict: “I have to be everything for everyone.”
  • Spiritual message: The war ends when you come back to yourself with radical compassion.
